Vowel Harmony

In Turkish, there are two type of vowels. The Suffixes depend on last vowel letter of a word.

  • Bold Vowels = a, ı, o, u
  • Thin Vowels = e, i, ö, ü

Examples for -da, -de (Preposition);

  • elmada (on the apple)
  • kızda (at the girl)
  • yolda (on the road)
  • suda (on the water)
  • evde (at home)
  • şehirde (in the city)
  • önde (ahead)
  • gülde (on the rose)

Examples for -dı, -du, -di, -dü (Past Tense);

  • kal (he stayed)
  • ısır (he bit)
  • koydu (he put)
  • buldu (he found)
  • geldi (he came)
  • sildi (he deleted)
  • gör (he saw)
  • gül (he laughed)
